How Writing Songs Uncovers Hidden Ideas

I’ve noticed a fascinating pattern in my songwriting: on the days I feel the most resistant to sitting down and getting started, there is almost always a fully formed song waiting to pour out. Even more surprising, these songs usually revolve around themes I didn't even realize were weighing on my mind. The creative process has a unique way of revealing hidden—yet deeply important—inner thoughts, which is a compelling reason for all of us to nurture our creativity. Here are a few ways that writing songs helps uncover the core of what we are truly experiencing.

It Unlocks the Subconscious Mind When I first tried meditation, I quickly realized—as anyone does when they finally pause and listen—just how loud and crowded my thoughts could be. Because our minds are constantly buzzing, taking the time to capture those thoughts, whether in a journal or through lyrics, is incredibly grounding. The simple act of writing can bring unexpected insights to the surface. This is particularly true for vulnerable emotions that we might hesitate to share in our everyday conversations. Putting pen to paper acts as a master key, unlocking the hidden doors to our subconscious.

It Bypasses Our Intellectual Filters Having worked with seasoned studio musicians in Nashville, I’m constantly blown away by their ability to hear a rough track and play perfectly along with it in just one or two takes. These professionals rarely need endless attempts to get it right. In fact, many session players will tell you that if they play a song too many times, they start overthinking it, and the music loses its magic. Songwriting works the exact same way. When we get lost in the flow of creating, we naturally sideline our inner critic, allowing raw, uncensored ideas to emerge. While logic and judgment are necessary for daily life, bypassing these filters during the creative process lets us tap into thoughts we would normally suppress or ignore.

It Taps Into Unexpressed Emotions While hard facts certainly have their place, the act of making something out of nothing is usually guided by our emotions. Even some of history’s greatest breakthroughs (Einstein's theories, for example) started as intuitive feelings rather than concrete data. Songwriting forces us to connect with our emotions, giving voice to concepts we might otherwise overlook. It is incredibly beneficial to occasionally set aside pure logic just to check in with how we are actually feeling.

Conclusion As a professional songwriter, I am fortunate to have a career built around accessing these inner thoughts daily. I know not everyone gets to do this for a living, but exploring your creativity remains just as vital. While it is great to be productive, logical, and methodical in life, failing to make space for our quieter, unexpressed emotions means we risk missing out on some of our most brilliant ideas.
